Brian's journey from occasional cyclist to being active every day

How one app user had made good habits stick with Get Active in Ebbsfleet

Before using the BetterPoints app, Brian was a keen but occasional cyclist. Since he discovered the app he now cycles every day, and has swapped all of his short car journeys to walking instead.

I asked him ‘How has taking part in Get Active in Ebbsfleet helped your health and wellbeing?’

“It’s basically been the catalyst to being active every day, which has helped keep me trim. Other people I know that are turning 50 are filling out and are less mobile than me, whereas I'm still in a healthy weight range and fit for my age.

A year and a half ago I was diagnosed with high functioning autistic spectrum disorder. As someone who thrives from routine the app satisfied my interest in data, maps, targets and achievements. In particular the data I get from mileage, calorie burn and CO2 saved. I’m astonished by the amount of CO2 I’m saving, even on small journeys it makes such a difference. If we could all make some tweaks to our travel habits - air quality and congestion would really improve.

How else has the BetterPoints app helped you?

During lockdown I was left with a big hole in my week when my regular 5-a-side football was cancelled. So I took to the streets and upped my cycling even more, taking in longer rides and filing that gap by being more active. Coupled with the fact that I had no commuting I had to motivate myself to get on the bike as part of this new normal. The app became more important to my daily routine than ever. I enjoy clocking up the points and aiming for all the different medals to collect.

It really helps having a traffic free route, and I’m lucky where in live as roads have been designed with cyclists in mind, with plenty of cycle routes to allow me to have a safe journey with very little else on the roads.

I like to regularly donate some of my BetterPoints to the Kent Air Ambulance, my sister in law and niece were airlifted to hospital after a horrific road traffic accident and Kent Air Ambulance saved their lives, so it’s charity really close to my heart. Thanks BetterPoints for helping keep me active and on the road." – Brian C from Dartford
