BetterPoints user Grace tells us her story

Lockdown scuppered Grace’s efforts to get active, which dented her confidence as a result. Discovering BetterPoints has helped her to get back on the right track. Here is what she had to say about the app and the Get Active in Ebbsfleet challenge.

How often were you getting physically active before you came across the Get Active in Ebbsfleet challenge?

“I used to go to the gym, but the first lockdown and having to work from home put an end to that. I gained a lot of weight during that time, which affected my self-esteem as well as my general mental state.

Even when things started to open-up again, my anxiety was initially preventing me from getting active and trying to boost my fitness levels. I felt like I wasn’t capable of much.

It was then that I got to know about the app as it was promoted by my daughter’s school. I took this as an opportunity to set myself the challenge of going out for a walk every morning.”

How has using the BetterPoints app helped you to get active? What do you like about it?

“The app motivates me in different ways. It has really helped to hold me accountable and to meet my walking targets. I use it to monitor how much activity I’ve done in the week in order to set new goals for the following week.

Seeing the points grow is massively encouraging as well.”

How have your active travel habits changed?

“Monday to Friday I will always start the day with a 45 to 60 minute walk. On the weekend I have begun running 3.5 miles over to Bluewater to grab a coffee too.

I’ve developed a rule whereby if a journey is less than 2 miles away I will definitely do it on foot.

I probably wouldn’t be getting active half as much but for the great footpaths and cut throughs that exist in Ebbsfleet. It’s a really good place to live for this.”

What benefits have you noticed as a result?

“It has helped me to drop weight. In July alone I lost 15 pounds. This has been especially beneficial for my mental wellbeing.

It has also allowed me to cross paths with other walkers and joggers, who I say hello to each morning. This has given me that sense of connection to people again, something we’ve lost of late.

I’ve come to value my active routine so much. I really want to keep it going when the time comes to return to the office.”
