Walking has helped my back immensely

BetterPoints user Chris tells us her story

Before discovering BetterPoints, Chris’ work and back problems had put pay to an active lifestyle. Thanks to a colleague and some encouragement from his GP, he’s now changed things for the better. Here is what he had to say about the app and the Get Active in Ebbsfleet challenge.

How often were you getting physically active before you came across the Get Active in Ebbsfleet challenge?

"Not often at all. I’m an IT manager which isn’t an active job by any means. Plus, I have a bad back which was putting me off for a long time. My GP was recommending that I needed to do more physical activity to ease my back problems. I mentioned it to a colleague, and they said you should use the BetterPoints app, as it will give you the push to get out and about."

How has using the BetterPoints app helped you to get active? What do you like about it?

"I find it really motivating. It is not so much the points, more the challenges and the medals. I absolutely love them! I thought the Dales Way Challenge during National Walking Month was inspired and I’m currently collecting Stay Active on Staycation medals for consecutive days of getting active. I’ve managed 7 days of walking in a row but I’m aiming for the top prize of 20 days.

It encourages me to try to improve on what I’ve done before. I am always a little disappointed if I haven’t improved on my stats from the previous week. As well as with myself, I’m competing against my work colleagues. About half a dozen of us are seeing who can do the most activity."

How have your active travel habits changed?

"I’m now walking to the office a couple of times a week, which is about 3-miles away. I’m going out for longer walks on the weekend too. I live in Gravesend and there are many great places to explore in the area, like Cobham Wood. I wouldn’t have discovered half of them if I hadn’t got off my backside.

I have cut my car use in half. If I’m picking up some bits from the supermarket, I will opt for the 20-minute walk to town rather than driving there."

What benefits have you noticed as a result?

"It has helped my back immensely. I don’t need to use my walking stick nearly as often as I used to, plus I’m sleeping a lot better because I’m in less pain. I’ve lost over a stone in weight too. I generally have a lot more energy than I once did. When I’m out on a walk, taking in the fresh air and listening to my music, I’m in such a good place!"
