Her Majesty's Youth Offenders' Institution
Huntercombe is a prison for young men aged 15-18, about half of whom have poor literacy and numeracy skills. Many find working in the classroom too much of a challenge and finding and keeping a job will be a serious struggle. Lack of a full-time, sustainable job means that the chance of re-offending can be very high.Working as a volunteer tutor in a juvenile secure establishment is a challenge which is open to all sorts of people, not just those with previous teaching experience. However, a volunteer needs to be positive, committed and a good listener and communicator. They also need to live within a 30 mile radius of Nuffield. There are two joint co-ordinators who provide on-going support and advice for a group of volunteers who come into Huntercombe to work on a One to One basis with the young people to help them improve their literacy and numeracy skills. Tutors come in once a week and teaching sessions are 1-2 hours long.
