What is the Get Active in Ebbsfleet challenge?

The Get Active in Ebbsfleet challenge is a free to join rewards program designed to help you get active, earn rewards and support local charities. It rewards regular physical activity for health, and active travel for commuting and leisure trips, for people in Ebbsfleet Garden City and the surrounding area. The challenge will run until 30th September 2023.

How has the Get Active in Ebbsfleet challenge been funded?

The Get Active in Ebbsfleet challenge has been funded by Ebbsfleet Development Corporation.

Why should I take part?

BetterPoints is an award-winning app that encourages people to walk, wheel, run and cycle for health, leisure and commuting. Taking part will allow you to earn rewards for getting active and travelling in environmentally friendly ways. You can support local charities with the BetterPoints you earn. The secure and anonymised data your participation provides will also help BetterPoints and Ebbsfleet Development Corporation evaluated the impact of the challenge, helping to make the local area a healthier, greener and more liveable place for everyone.

How can I get involved?

Check out the Join Get Active in Ebbsfleet challenge page, or in a nutshell:

  • Download the free BetterPoints app from the App Store or Google Play.
  • Register on the app.
  • Join the Get Active in Ebbsfleet challenge.
  • To manually record an activity, tap the ▶️ Play button at the start. Don’t forget to press stop when you’re finished.
  • Or, to track your activity automatically, switch the automatic tracking function on - the app will then pick up when you’re on the move.
  • Check your points balance and help your favourite cause via the Donations tab or treat yourself via the Redeem section.

Can I join if I live outside of Ebbsfleet Garden City?

Yes! Everyone that lives within the area outlined in red below is eligible to join the challenge. Equally, this is the rewards area, so any recorded activities that start or finish within this area will earn BetterPoints and BetterTickets from the challenge.

How can I earn points or win a prize?

You can earn points and win lots of fantastic prizes for travelling actively and sustainably. Check out all the rewards here.

What is the difference between BetterTickets and BetterPoints?

BetterPoints are a financially backed currency that you can earn by tracking your activities - over time these add up. Your points balance can be viewed from the ☰ menu button in the top left hand corner of the app. Once you've collected enough points you can redeem them for high street vouchers or donate to your favourite charity or community group (1,000 BetterPoints is equivalent to £1).

BetterTickets are prize draw entries earned for doing a specific activity. Prizes can include pots of BetterPoints or specific things e.g. event tickets, a bike service.

What can I spend my points on?

You can give your points to your favourite charity by tapping Donate along the bottom navigation bar in your app, or trade them in for local and national vouchers by selecting Redeem.

What type of activity counts?

All recorded walking, wheeling, running or cycling activities that start or finish within the area illustrated above will count towards the challenge. Where possible, we would like to encourage you to build in activity that directly replaces car journeys. However, activities completed for general health and leisure will also count.

Can I take part if I use a wheelchair, and if so, how do I record my journeys?

Yes! All kinds of wheelchairs can be tracked as 'wheeling' in our app. You download the app as per the instructions above. If you select automatic tracking, the app will automatically track your activity. Due to the motion sensors inbuilt in your device, and our algorithms in the app, it may assume you are cycling, rather than wheeling. In your timeline, after completing your activity, you will be able to amend this to wheeling and your activity will be updated. You will be awarded the same amount of points/tickets as walking, running or cycling.

Do you have any more questions?

If you have any further questions or encounter any issues with the app, tap the ☰ menu button in the top left-hand corner and then ‘Help’. Most queries can be answered here but, if not, you can contact BetterPoints by tapping the 💬 speech bubble in the top-right hand corner or by emailing: customercare@betterpoints.uk.
